Question:
The doctor is lazy, greedy, and willing to actually harm the baby to have a chance to get the pearl. Why do you think John Steinbeck makes a man whose profession is designed to help others so selfish and even destructive? What is the message?
My Answer:
I think that Steinbeck is trying to show that the people were better off without the french. I think that maybe Steinbeck didn't trust people so he showed us why. That is just my guess so please help me by giving me ideas!

Go Beth! I don't like the French either! i think that he is a fate , lazy and greedy! The only way to get him to work is if he gets something out of it. That sucks.

Maybe Steinbeck had an experience throughout his life that had to do with a doctor that made him bitter. I don't really know...
what a boo bird
I think he's showing the social injustice of how the poor are so looked down on and how the rich are so vain and cruel. And then also the fakeness of the doctor and his "kindness". Maybe also that just because he's wealthy and mean doesn't mean that he has all the answers.

My Granpa calls me Boo Bird! I miss him! You are probably right, Anna! Maybe Steinbeck had a bad experience or maybe he thought the the indians ways of doing things was better and he wanted to show it!
The Dark One is here, and he is hungry!
Barzuln!
I think that the Docor is an example of the "dark" side of human nature:gready and lazy. I think that Steinbeck put him there so that we could realize how unpleasant being greedy and lazy really is
Ya I agree. I also think he is trying to show that people can be happy without lots of wealth, and sometimes can be worse off with wealth.
The doctor would kill the baby and kino for the pearl
I still hate the Doc! I think he's fat and lazy, more than me even!
I'm Coming!
