Question:
The doctor is lazy, greedy, and willing to actually harm the baby to have a chance to get the pearl. Why do you think John Steinbeck makes a man whose profession is designed to help others so selfish and even destructive? What is the message?
My Answer:
I think that Steinbeck is trying to show that the people were better off without the french. I think that maybe Steinbeck didn't trust people so he showed us why. That is just my guess so please help me by giving me ideas!

Kino
Ok! Why does Kino not throw the pearl away when Juana asks him to? Is he to proud or is he greedy?
I think that Kino didn't want the people to say: "He said that he would do great things and now look at him, he is back to square one!" Well thats just what I think!

Here is another one!
In A Christmas Carol Dickens writes about Christmas. Was Dickens a believer? If he was, why did he never write about Jesus? All he did was talk about being kind and good. Both thoes things are good, but why doesn't he talk about God? If you think that he does talk about Jesus, please tell me.
Why?
This is my new question:
The author of The Old Man and the Sea has the theme of not giving up in lots of his books. Why does he have this theme, and tell us to never give up if he, himself gave up on life?
This has been really bothering me! If you guys have any ideas please write them!
He might have believed it for awhile and then changed his mind or maybe he never believed it! What do you think?

In our past
Hey! As you know this is my new blog for talking about different novels. The last two books that we read were "A Christmas Carol" and "The Old Man and the Sea". The first topic I would like to talk about is how Charles Dickens and Earnest Hemmingway wrote about their own period of time. Can we get any insight from their novels about these two periods in history?
My answer:
I think that we can get alot from the novels about their times! For example: We can guess that the people in England in the time that Charles Dikens wrote his book, did not say Merry Christmas to one another. One reason why I know that is because Mrs. Koning told it to us, but if you are really smart you could see that by just reading the novel. We can see that at the time that Earnest Hemmingway wrote his novel the people of Cuba got all their money from fishing. So we can get lots from these books about the times.
